Death as a strangler (on the first appearance of cholera in paris in 1831)image description in the article alfred rethel in the adb: he was inspired to create this picture by the story of how, in the carnival of 1831 in paris, cholera appeared in the midst of the joy of a masked ball and claimed its victims from the ranks of the dancers. Dancers and minstrels leave the hall in fearful haste. Only a mummy-like ghost, cholera, a figure of horror, stands in its place as if petrified and holds the victorious scourge like a sceptre in its bone hand. In the middle of the ballroom, however, stands death in a long robe, the only minstrel with the bone fiddle. Corpses lie around on the floor, still dressed in their harlequin jackets; distorted features peek out from under the masks. Note: image description according to source death as a strangler. Date: 1847/48.
