in a stylish interior, a young woman seated at her round table is busy with sewing work. A young man lies inelegantly (feet on cushions) on a sofa beside her. Without education or very comfortable, he kept his shoes and hat. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "thus the point of honor was stronger for max than sound politics. Returning home at one o'clock, flore locked herself in her room to cry at her ease. Throughout that day, the disettes went their train in issoudun, where a duel between philippe and maxence was considered inevitable. -- ah! monsieur hochon, said mignonnet accompanied by carpentier who met the old man on the boulevard baron, we are very worried, because gilet is very strong with any weapon - no matter, replied the old provincial diplomat, philippe has carried out this affair well and i would not have believed that this big shameless person would have succeeded so quickly.
