Engraving by jacob houbraken after a drawing by hendrik pothoven of amsterdam regent and civic guard officer nicolaes hasselaer as he was portrayed in 1633. It is based on the group portrait of the regents of the amsterdam city orphanage painted in 1633 by abraham de vries. On the oval edge at the top it is inscribed "jacob backer pinxit", probably because when hendrik pothoven made his drawing, the signature of the artist abraham de vries on the sword handle of hasselaer was not visible due to an accumulation of varnish. That painting had been commissioned as a pendant portrait in the same year as a portrait of the regentesses by jacob adriaensz. Backer, so the mistake was easily made. This engraving appeared in a monthly magazine (total number of issues 45) published by isaac tirion with historic sketches of holland from 1760 onwards, called 'hedendaagse historie'. Date: circa 1760.
