La castidad, José del Castillo, between 1770 and 1772

It is part of a set of four preparatory sketches for tapestry cartoons. They are part of the decoration of six overdoors of the conversation piece of the room of king carlos iii in the royal palace of madrid. Based on the allegories that corrado giaquinto painted for an analogous room in the palace of aranjuez, the figures are accompanied by their complex symbols alluding to the apocalypse. The prophecy, with the sword in his right hand and the trumpet in his left, the sun behind the clouds and a dove on his head; two putti carry a tablet with the word prophecy in latin, which will be fulfilled with the triumph of the mystical lamb indicated by wisdom.
