The Virgin and Child with Repentant Sinners, Anthony van Dyck, circa 1625

The virgin mary holds the child jesus in her arms. They are contemplated by mary magdalene, the prodigal son and king david, who symbolize three sins of repentant sinners: prostitution, prodigality and adultery. The work was owned by the duke of medina de las torres, in viceregal naples. He then went to antwerp and finally decorated the ante-sacristy of the escorial monastery with philip iv, in the mid-17th century. Later it arrived at the royal academy of fine arts of san fernando, first in its warehouses and then abandoned (probably because it was considered a copy of van dyck) in one of the combs where the unexhibited works of the royal academy of fine arts are preserved.
