The artwork depicts a 'small' pinnace, a boat design that was used on the earliest voyages from england to establish the popham colony in southern maine, and settlement at jamestown and other sites on coastal virginia in the first decade of the 17th century. The 1584 date refers to the ill-fated, late 16th century english colony at roanoke, virginia. Date: circa 1850.
