Portrait of a Young Woman in Satin, Franciscus Haagen, circa 1690 (Baroque)
Dressed in satin with a pearl choker in the fashion popular during the late 1600s, this young, aristocratic lady sits before a wild landscape that suggests the park of a vast estate. Below her elbow on a rock is a butterfly identified as a red admiral; its prominence suggests that it has some special meaning for her. Haagen was influenced by netscher and worked principally for members of the aristocratic pfalz-neuburg family at different residences in central europe. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: circa 1690 (Baroque). Place of creation: Neuburg, Germany (?). Dimensions: height: 49.2 cm (19.3 in); width: 40 cm (15.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Walters Art Museum.
