Lukas cranach the younger: christ on the cross (1571; 250 x 156 cm; information on lucascranach. Org). The painting hangs on the staircase to the exhibition rooms in the luther house in wittenberg. It shows christ alive on the cross, looking at the viewer. In the latin verses he speaks to the viewer and interprets his suffering and death as a sacrifice of atonement for his sins. The text is by johann major (1533-1600), published in his elegiae 1584 (digital copy). Date: 1571 (Photo 2017-09-20).
