Hms 'lion', battle-cruiser, in port-bow view: probably a study for the battle of jutland this is a port-bow view of the battlecruiser 'lion' , stationary in the water, possibly off a jetty to the left, with her forward guns trained out to starboard, between late 1916 and mid-1917. She was launched on 6 august 1910, completed in may 1912 and her torpedo nets were removed during her post-jutland repair in june 1916. They are not shown here and nor are the deflection scales on 'b' turret fitted in late 1917, which gives the roughly one-year window in which this study was made. In the preface to his co-authored book 'more sea fights of the great war' (1919) wyllie expressly states that when sketching warships on the spot after battles, in order to make pictures of them, it was with 'the guns being specially trained and elevated to the correct position', thanks to the co-operation of the navy.
