Christiane vulpius and august. Watercolor. August goethe (1789–1830) was christiane's only surviving child. Goethe ordered his irregular schooling, and only at the age of fourteen did he have his housemate riemer give him systematic instruction. In 1808 august entered the university of heidelberg, later jena; in 1810 his father found him a position as a chamber assessor, but he used him mainly to provide practical assistance in his supervision of the institutions for science and art. A year after his father's death, august married ottilie von pogwitsch, an unhappy man. Date: 1793.
