A moorish patio, John Singer Sargent, 1879

Verso: study for the jewellery design in the painting 'fumée d'ambre gris'. Sargent travelled to spain in 1879 where he studied the paintings of diego velazquez in the prado, madrid, and later travelled south to cordoba, granada, seville, malaga, and gibraltar. At the alhambra, the palace of the moorish and later christian kings, sargent was mainly interested in architectural design and ornament. The present watercolour drawing is one of a number of works recording this interest. The drawing shows the entrance to the patio de los leones. A similar view presenting the same entrance from a different angle is at the metropolitan museum, new york (50. 130. 36). Date: 1879. Collection: British Museum.
