The work represents the last moments of king ferdinand iii of castile († 1252), nicknamed the saint, who died in the city of seville on may 30, 1252, and is considered the masterpiece of the sevillian painter virgilio mattoni. This canvas was painted for the national exhibition of 1887, where it was awarded the second medal, and the way in which the death of the monarch was represented is inspired by a fragment of the chronicle of spain, which was composed during the reign of his own son and heir, alfonso x the wise.
