The work, titled the virgin of charity, represents the virgin mary with a group of faithful. It had to be one of the most important paintings in the composition, where el greco tries to show us the virtue of charity through an iconography of medieval roots about the virgin of mercy. In the center of the composition is the imposing virgin opening her mantle and sheltering a group of faithful dressed in castilian gorgets, following the fashion of the time; some of these figures are portraits of gentlemen belonging to the toledo nobility of the 16th century (among them is jorge manuel theotocópuli, son of el greco). In this canvas we see that el greco uses the disproportion typical of his final style, somewhat pronounced here because this painting was designed to be seen from the bottom up. Today, within reach of the viewer's eyes, it seems too disproportionate, especially the body of mary with monumental legs in the foreground concluding in a tiny head. Object Type: painting.
