Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-12-13) letter no. 217 (1943-12-24) next letter (1943-12-30) envelope: front back text christmas eve. [1943] my beloved mother! now it is christmas eve, our community celebration is over, it was very beautiful. Now i am sitting here at the table with other comrades and writing. Beautiful german christmas music is playing on the radio, each of us is thinking of our loved ones at home and those out there. Only today can we measure how happy and grateful we must be that we are safe on this evening. Santa claus gave us lots of presents this year and today it gave me a special treat because he brought me a lovely letter from you in the mail after a long time. Now this letter is in front of me. How many times have i read it and thought about you, what are you doing today [how are you and how are you spending this evening?]. Date: 24 December 1943.
