Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-03-04) letter no. 143 (1943-03-09) next letter (1943-03-14) east, 9. 3. 43 my beloved mum, today your lovely letter of february 26th arrived. As always, i was very happy about it. You don’t need to worry about the cold. I have great winter clothing and it’s not so cold now. I’m telling you, i’m still fine and don’t need to stand guard. I only go on guard duty for two hours at most at night, but the other guys always have to be outside for two hours, then two hours in the bunker. Then out again. Staring through the wire into the white no man’s land for two hours in the snow and cold is no small feat. You can see that i’m much better off there! have you tried toast? yes, sauna, finnish baths are great. I'm doing fine so far, i'm healthy and in good spirits. Life always goes on as usual, the same old story. Date: 9 March 1943.
