"coming from the procuratoria de supra, the portrait, as indicated by the writing removed in the restoration of 1959, depicts the prosecutor andrea cappello. Furthermore, the writing also bore the date 1523, the year in which cappello was elected prosecutor; however, the dating of the canvas is rather uncertain and given that the portrait appears to be of a rather advanced age, it is to be believed that the execution of the work must be placed close to the death of cappello, which occurred in 1562. Historically attributed to titian, the painting was returned to tintoretto's catalog only in the 19th century, although the psychological rendering of the character is clearly evident: the prosecutor seems to slip out of the shadows and observe the spectator with a hard and inquisitive gaze and the firmness of the hat is further underlined by the closed hand clutching a white handkerchief that emerges from under the cermesi robe pictorial, firm and robustly innervated, it also helps to avoid any pause or ornamental underlining and to emphasize the energetic face of the prosecutor. The state of conservation of the painting is not excellent and the paint layer is rather washed out, factors which make it difficult to fully observe the fresh brushwork typical of tintoretto of these years.
