Female head in granite (portrait of mrs. Rimmer), created c. 1859 by
william rimmer (1816–1879)
1882 photo; the current location of this artwork is unknown. The photo is from the book art life of william rimmer, sculptor, painter, and physician by truman bartlett. On pages 26-27 bartlett quotes an unnamed source who "was in the granite business" and who states that he became acquainted with rimmer in 1858 and gave him the granite out of which he sculpted both this work and his well-known saint stephen. The source says that this was the third granite sculpture that rimmer attempted and was followed by st. Stephen (in 1860), thus its date is about 1859. In american art and american art collections, bartlett says that it is a portrait of the artist's wife, mary peabody rimmer.
