Egbert haubois (ca. 1602/1610 – 1653) received permission from the city council in 1631 to “cut this city into a copper plate”. What he captured was the strongest fortified city in the north of the republic. After expanding the fortifications in the early 17th century, the city council looked for opportunities to make groningen a flourishing metropolis in the economic field. But the map shows that by the early 1930s the dream of prosperity had not come true, ambitious economic plans had not been realized and large areas within the fortifications remained undeveloped. Haubois' large map was published in 1645. This design for the map was used a number of years later as the basis for a reduced version of the map (the so-called 'kleine haubois'): the city with surrounding fortifications. With the coats of arms of the province and the city in the upper edge, and in between 7 portraits of governors since 1594. Below this a city profile, an image of the st. Walburg church, and a profile of a rampart. In the left edge maps of fortresses: lieroort, delfzijl, and bourtange. In the right edge maps of the langakkerschans, bellingwolderschans and coevorden. Also some fortresses on the lower edge. Bottom center is a map of the province of groningen, based on the map of barthold wicheringe. Date: 1652.
