iconographic description:
illustration for the 5th gosselin edition of "notre-dame de paris", volume i, title page. Historical commentary:
this engraving serves as a title vignette for the first volume from the fifth edition of "notre-dame de paris", in four volumes, in may 1831. Victor hugo's novel "notre-dame de paris" had seven editions in 1831, in two volumes for the first from march, in four volumes, from the fifth in may. Tony johannot first produced three vignettes: the grimacing head of quasimodo for the cover, “a tear for a drop of water” or “the pillory” for the title of the 1st volume and “three hearts of men made differently” [“the honorable amendment”] for the title of the 2nd volume. He added two more in may, “besos para golpes” [“esmeralda before claude frollo”], which adorns the title of the first volume, and “the little shoe” or “esmeralda and the bag” which adorns the title of the 4th volume. The first two vignettes are thus shifted to the 2nd volume for “a tear for a drop of water” and to the 3rd for “l’amende honorable”. Themes / subjects / places represented:
