iconographic description:
above the open bay of launay to the north-east of paimpol (brittany), three peasant women collect hay on a beautiful summer day. Two of them bend over to form bundles. The face of the third who carries her load on her back expresses the difficulty of the task. Historical commentary:
essentially an engraver and landscaper, henri rivière is one of the major artists of color prints. He successfully practiced color lithography but the peak of his art remained his color woodblocks. In his works there is a profound influence of the japanese prints that he admires and collects. The wood presented here belongs to "breton landscapes", one of his two series of woodcuts and, quantitatively, the most important. Themes / subjects / places represented:
genre scene, pastoral scene, field work, hay, harvest, summer, woman, headdress, peasant, breton, coastal landscape, seaside, bay, channel, ploubazlanec, brittany
