Portrait of Cosimo II de' Medici, Cristofano Allori, between 1610 and 1615

Undisputed protagonist of his time, as his clothing faithfully reflects, characterized by the richness of the qualities and the presence of royal symbols such as the crown on which the arm rests or the gold details, which are arranged on the armor. Located facing the viewer and standing against a background in which the curtains stand out, the work presents similar aesthetic patterns of the time, intended for the representation of aristocratic characters. The quality of the glaze forms a meticulous and truthful effigy, although slightly idealized in the pose and features of the protagonist, cosimo ii de' medici (1590-1621) grand duke of tuscany. The hand of the artist in our painting must be placed at the florentine court around 1610. The main artists who worked for the grand duke would be allori, passignano and tiberio titi (which bears similarities to this work and has been considered a possible attribution). Professor antonio vanugli himself, who has investigated the work, suggests that both titi and allori are surely the authors of this portrait. The similarity between both styles and their proximity in time and space lead to discussion between their works. It would be necessary to compare two works by allori about cosimo himself dated between 1609 and 1618 where he shows us a grand duke who still looks like an adolescent (perhaps somewhat younger than what is presented in our work). These two portraits would be the one kept in the museo nacional del prado c. 1609 and the one in the palazzo pitti c. 1618. It is worth mentioning that tiberio titti presents other examples comparable to the one we present, such as the one dated around 1620 in the private florentine collection (formerly attributed to suttermans) and the one from 1627 in the national museum of basilicata. From these comparisons we could derive its dating. The date towards which the work should have been executed is between 1610-1615 since the clear evolution of the character's face shows this. The allori of 1608 is clearly a teenager while the titi of 1627 is a more mature man. These characteristic physical features and their treatment could respond more faithfully to the models created by allori. Professor vanugli reflects in greater depth his analysis of attribution and is available to those interested. Object Type: painting. Date: between 1610 and 1615. Dimensions: height: 217 cm (85.4 in); width: 136.5 cm (53.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Unidentified location. Allori, Cristofano - Portrait of Cosimo II de' Medici
