Japanese Embassy Fresco Quirinal Palace, Giovanni Lanfranco, 1616

This fresco is part of a frieze in the salone dei corazieri (great hall of the curassiers; prevously known as sala regia) in the quirinal palace, rome, italy. It is one of eight frescos in this room depicting foreign ambassadorial missions to the papal states during the reign of pope paul v. This particular picture details the embassy of hasekura tsunenaga (支倉 常長, 1571–1622) that arrived in rome in the winter of 1615, only a few months prior to the painting of the frieze. Hasekura, resting his head in his hand, is shown discussion with the franciscan translator louis sotelo, surrounded by other members of the embassy. This is a screenshot, taken in 2021, of a reproduction published on the web page of the quirinal palace (https://palazzo. Quirinale. It/). Date: 1616.
