Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-02-20) letter no. 135 (1943-02-21) next letter (1943-02-22) east, february 21, 1943. My beloved mother! first of all, my heartfelt greetings and many thanks for the kind greetings and delivery. You can imagine my joy when i went to get food and the mail was being distributed. Suddenly it started, cook, cook and cook one after the other. All ten 100 gram packages arrived at once! my comrades were "smooth". Now it was off to the bunker to bake. I really enjoyed the baked goods and thank you again for everything. Yesterday morning i also wrote you a flower card. We celebrated something and my comrades signed it too. I had a good night this night as i was able to sleep in for once, but i also made the most of it and "slept" from 7 p. M. To 6 a. M. ! sleep is probably the most precious thing here. I have it better in that respect. Today is sunday again, and you don't notice it at all here. There's stew as always and everything else goes on as usual. I'm still doing well and am enjoying my health, everything is fine. The russian is still "well-behaved" and keeping calm. The weather is different, sometimes it's cold and then it thaws again, usually there's snow and the wind blows all the ditches closed so you have to shovel a lot. Once our bunker exit was completely blown over. Now i'm going to write you some news that will make you laugh. Imagine if i voluntarily took 3 spoonfuls of cod liver oil every day! one after every meal! how i ran from [???] as a child every time you wanted to give me some. Now i know that it's very healthy and i quite like the taste. Yes, that's how you change over time. - what's new at home now? you're healthy and fresh, aren't you? now many small businesses in vienna are also being closed and [moved in. ]. Date: 21 February 1943.
