In 1873, niklaus riggenbach, on behalf of the basel company internationale gesellschaft für bergbahnen, applied for the construction of a cog railway leading to the swabian mountain. The construction of the railway line began immediately after the permit was issued on july 3, 1873. The manager of the construction works was ferenc cathry szaléz, a native of switzerland, who built his villa, which is still standing today, near the railway.
