Representation of the holy trinity: eye of god, below ihs (in hoc signum [vinces] = in this sign [you will conquer]) and below the dove as a symbol of the holy spirit. Comment: silver strike from the ducat dies. - the name of this ducat comes from the first minting in 1616 under the electress sophia, the widow of the saxon elector christian i (1586-1591). The mother of the ruling elector johann georg i (1615-1656) allegedly had these ducats minted for her children for christmas for 2000 meissen guilders, or 42,000 groschen (the ducat was worth 36 groschen - according to contemporary valuations of the ducat at just under 48 groschen, this corresponds to a circulation of around 875 ducats). The dresden mint continued to mint them until 1873. They were a popular christening gift. On the original coins of the electress sophia, the inscription reads: "wol dem der freud an sein kindern erleben" (wol to him who experiences joy in his children), on the later coins it is then in the singular "kind". Other names for the ducat are also sun, child or trinity ducat. Literature: otto merseburger collection, including coins and medals from saxony (1894) no. 770. - for the ducats see j. And a.
