His face expresses disappointment. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "she was so unhappy, so worried when hippolyte did not come; she knew so well how to scold him for his absences that the painter stopped seeing his friends and going out into society. Adélaïde allowed the natural jealousy of women to shine through when she learned that sometimes, when leaving madame de rouville's house, at eleven o'clock, the painter still made visits and toured the most brilliant salons of paris. First she claimed that this kind of life was bad for one's health; then she found a way to tell him, with that profound conviction to which the accent, the gesture and the look of a loved one give so much power: "that a man obliged to lavish on several women both his time and the graces of his mind could not be the object of a very strong affection.
