A fleet from the Netherlands, led by admiral Opdam, enters the Sound on October 29, 1658., Frederik Christian Lund, 1872

This painting depicts the opening phase of the battle of the sound. The fleet pressed past kronborg castle, occupied by the swedes, and king carl x gustav (in the centre) could only watch, because the ships kept close to the opposite side of the entrance to the sound - out of reach of the guns of kronborg. After entering the sound, the dutch fleet was met by a slightly larger swedish fleet, but fought its way through to relieve the danish capital of copenhagen. Object Type: painting.
