Great martyr demetrius of thessaloniki. Andreas ritsos, school. First half of the 16th century, macedonia. Wood (reliquary), canvas, tempera, gilding. 54x37 cm. The pushkin state museum of fine arts. Zh-3174 restored in 1978 in the workshop of the a. S. Pushkin state museum of fine arts, restorer v. N. Zinoviev. Solid board, reliquary. Canvas. Loss of wood along the edge, loss of gesso and paint layer, in places the upper layers of painting, especially the highlights, have been washed off. Losses have been restored. Inscriptions: "st. Demetrius"; below on the reliquary: "prayer [. . ] and his children"; below, a later "lord, have mercy on st. Demetrius". The icon is of good quality, dating back to the middle byzantine tradition, copying a fine example. The monument of the circle of the icon "st. George" of 1441 from a private collection could be such a sample. The stylized techniques are mainly late palaeologus. The iconography is traditional. The composition is balanced. The culture of personal writing with deep green sankyr, olive ochre, cinnabar accents, and smooth highlights is preserved. The image of the armor and the ornament also indicate adherence to the byzantine tradition. But the drawing is roughened, the proportions are somewhat distorted, which is especially noticeable in the image of the defeated king. The technique of writing, the interpretation of the image, the dark manure, and the red edging are characteristic of macedonian art of the 16th century. This monument should be dated later than the macedonian icon "st. George and demetrius" of the late 15th - early 16th centuries from the byzantine museum in athens. Date: 1-я половина 16 века, Македония.
