In the background, some people lean towards a four-poster bed that can barely be seen. In the center of the image, a man standing with bowed legs, his arms cluttered with two piles of small boxes (sweets?). A smiling woman with chubby cheeks stands near him while a young woman carries an infant in her arms. On the right of the image, three other people look at the baby, smiling. On a desk are stacked other small boxes. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the morals of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "five days later, bianchon and duriau, the famous midwife, were established at lousteau's who, since the response of little la baudraye, flaunted his happiness and made pomp about the birth of dinah. Monsieur de clagny and madame piédefer, who arrived in a pack, were the godfathers and godmother of the expected child, because the far-sighted magistrate feared that madame de la baudraye would make some serious mistake to envy queens who want an heir presumptive. Themes / subjects / places represented: subject of society, morals, infant = baby, domestic interior, nanny = governess mode of acquisition: purchase institution: maison de balzac inventory number: bal 98-135. Date: 1827.
