View taken at les montalais, at 23 route des gardes, by lina jaunez, salon of 1834. (house of eugène scribe)
the painting represents the very beautiful view overlooking the seine, séguin island and sèvres, taken from the terrace of the hôtel de montalais in meudon, the buildings of which we recognize in the foreground. At the salon of 1834, lina jaunez exhibited two views taken in montalais under the same number. Our painting is one of the two. Originally a simple country house built in 1772, the building was acquired in 1796 by mr. Leuthraud, future marquis de beauregard who gave it as a gift to his mistress, the famous actress mademoiselle lange. The latter called on the architect bélanger to transform the building up to date, in the directoire style and enlarged the area where she organized magnificent parties. Several representations of the hôtel de montalais are known, notably the lithographs produced by louis albert
bacler d'albe, at the beginning of the 19th century, and preserved in sceaux at the musée d'ile de france. We can recognize the turret, now destroyed, which appears on our painting. The property passed successively into the hands of hugues bernard maret, duke of bassano, the banker jacques laffitte and jean-baptiste noddler who extended it further before selling it in 1829 to the writer eugène scribe who lived there for twenty-four years. The hotel also takes the name of maison d'eugène scribe. In 1853, eugène scribe ceded it to general leroy de saint-arnaud. At the end of the second empire the estate will be subdivided. Only the central pavilion still remains. Student of jean-thomas thibault, noticed at the salon of 1833, marie caroline jaunez, known as lina jaunez, founded a drawing course for ladies and young ladies at the athénée des beaux-arts (rue de seine saint germain in paris). She was the author of columns and reviews published in le journal des femmes and of works on anatomy and perspective. Catalog archived link. Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1834.
