Old Gateway at Stepney, Nathaniel Smith, 1873 (1887 copy)

Old gateway at stepney. (from a view published by n. Smith, 1791). This house by tradition is called king johns gate from waht authority is not known, but will serve as specimen of variegated brick work and the oldest remaining house in stepney. View of a gateway in stepney, london, 1791. Near old ford stood at one time a medieval gatehouse associated by tradition with 'king john's palace'. Over time there seems to have been confusion between this gatehouse and the gateway to the mansion called worcester house, just to the east of stepney parish church: the latter gateway appears to be the subject of this view. Traditionally called king johns gate, it is reputed to be the oldest house in stepney and a good specimen of variegated brickwork. Date: 1873 (1887 copy).
