Unknown Man, inscribed "Phil- Melanchthon", by Hans Holbein the Younger, 1532–43

Unknown Man, inscribed "Phil- Melanchthon", by Hans Holbein the Younger, 1532–43

Portrait of an unknown man, inscribed "phil: melanchton". Black chalk, pen and indian ink on pink-primed paper, 28. 8 × 23. 5 cm, royal collection, windsor castle. The drawing is badly rubbed and retouched by later hands with chalk and ink, and there is a hole near the middle of the hat. Holbein's left-handed shading can me seen in the hat. The identification, added later, of the sitter as the reforming german theologian philipp melanchthon is thought to be false. The subject does not resemble holbein's painted portrait of melanchthon or other portraits of him. The subject is not a member of the nobility or a courtier (parker, 55). Date: 1532–43.
