Ichikawa danjuro viii as kamiya iemon, a ronin turned paper umbrella maker, looking at a lantern in which he sees the ghost of his wife oiwa, as portrayed by ichikawa kodanji iv, in the play 'atari mimasu yotsuya no kikigaki' (当三升四谷聞書) at the kawarasaki theatre in the ninth month of kaei 1 (1848).
