Saint Peter Nolasco embarks to redeem captives, Francisco Pacheco, circa 1600

The work represents san pedro nolasco embarking to go to redeem captives held by the muslims, and comes from the convent of la merced in seville. José maría asensio identified the figure of the boatman as a possible portrait of the famous writer miguel de cervantes, based on pacheco's "book of portraits" and an anonymous "relation" from the 17th century where it was recorded that "next to mercedarian parents, the painter had placed several well-known captives, among them cervantes" (josé luis gonzalo sánchez-molero, the epistle to mateo vázquez: history of a controversy literary around cervantes, 2010, pg 43).
