The queen of sheba in front of king solomon from the inside of the salvation mirror altar, around 1435-1440. Coniferous wood. Originally, the tablet was part of a huge reredos for the high altar of a basel church. It shows the compact figures typical of witz, which are composed of plastic, often massive shapes. The sometimes carved-looking faces and speaking hands give them liveliness. At the same time, the painter shines with a pointed description of materiality, as here with the precious stones on salomon's velvet hat or the iridescent green tones of his robe.
