The Queen of Sheba before Solomon, Konrad Witz, 1435

The Queen of Sheba before Solomon, Konrad Witz, 1435

The queen of sheba in front of king solomon from the inside of the salvation mirror altar, around 1435-1440. Coniferous wood. Originally, the tablet was part of a huge reredos for the high altar of a basel church. It shows the compact figures typical of witz, which are composed of plastic, often massive shapes. The sometimes carved-looking faces and speaking hands give them liveliness. At the same time, the painter shines with a pointed description of materiality, as here with the precious stones on salomon's velvet hat or the iridescent green tones of his robe. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1435. Dimensions: height: 84.5 cm (33.2 in) ; width: 79 cm (31.1 in). Medium: oak panel. Depicted People: Solomon, Queen of Sheba. Collection: Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Spätgotik exhibition Queen of Sheba before King Solomon by Konrad Witz 9240
