explanation
this print was originally intended as part of the so-called postcard from 1666. Although the year 1665 is in the cartouche of that card, archival research shows that the card was not completed until 1666 (see documentation). This map consisted of (from top to bottom): - a view of the west side of the meuse (first is printed from two plates, plates then cut in half so that the second is printed from four plates); - a map of the maas estuary (printed from four plates) with left and right five prints relating to the postal service (probably printed from ten plates, possibly previously printed from fewer plates that were later cut); - a view of the north side of the maas (first is printed from two plates, plates then cut in half so that the second is printed from four plates); - (possibly) an explanation of the map in letterpress. This map was initially published by jacob quack. After he died in 1668, the map (and/or individual parts thereof) was probably published several times. At least three editions are known of the part of the map of the maas estuary: - an edition by jacob quack (his name remains on later editions), 1666; - a publication by jan houwens (i), probably in 1698 and perhaps earlier; - an anonymous edition, published after the publication of jan houwens (i) (his name is visibly erased on the map part), in or after 1698. A complete copy of the postcard is in the rotterdam city archives and the maritime museum rotterdam. Subject
