historical commentary:
former royal abbey for girls, then boarding school, free school and retirement home, madame récamier lived there for thirty years and held her salon there frequented by châteaubriand, lamartine, stendhal, musset. These buildings, as well as the cloister, were demolished in 1906 and 1907, during the construction of rue récamier and the extension of boulevard raspail (see hillairet, 1985, vol. Ii).
