iconographic description:
in an office, employees sit and eat or finish lunch. In the foreground, a standing man holds a tray supporting a carafe and a glass, his wife and child follow him. On the right of the image, a seated woman converses with an employee. Other employees sit with their arms dangling and digest their meals. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. That the rat is in the theater: something naive, candid, a being blinded by illusions, where would we go? [excerpt from the employees or the superior woman, by honoré de balzac]
