Virgil (publius vergilius maro); roman poet, later interpreted as a prophet in the middle ages. Virgil lived from about 70 bc to 19 ad. A time in which there were neither books (from the 5th century) nor glasses (from the 13th century). A classic example of anticipatory anachronisms. While this picture was painted by ludger tom ring the elder (1496–1547) from münster around 1538, his son hermann tom ring (1521–1596) painted the same motif in a very similar representation in the middle of the 16th century, also with a long, split beard, book and now dark riveted glasses. Date: 1538c.
