Anonymous engraving reproducing a painting by eugénie servières entitled "marie stuart presented at the paris salon of 1822 (number 1192 of the booklet). The engraving was published in "la guirlande des dames", a french almanac by albéric deville (9th grade, 1823) with the following description:
"marie-stuart, daughter of james v, king of scotland, inherited her father's throne eight days after her birth, in 1542. She married in 1558, françois dauphin of france, son and successor of henry ii. This monarch having died two years later, she left france with great regret, and perhaps with a sad presentiment of the misfortunes which awaited her in scotland. Mme servières represented this queen unfortunate on the ship which transports her to her native country she still sees the coasts of france and expresses her pain in a romance which has remained with us:
farewell, sweet country of france! / o my homeland / the most cherished, / who nourished my young childhood: / farewell, france, farewell to our beautiful days! / the ship that separates our loves / only had half of me; / one part remains with you, it is yours; / i trust it to your friendship, / so that the other will remember you.
