Historical background:
"several portraits of black adolescents pass, or have passed, for portraits of zamor, the young page of bengalese origin, who arrived in france in 1769 and "adopted" by the countess du barry. In the upper echelons of french society of the time, it was not uncommon to have a "negrillon" in one's service. We know that the countess du barry ordered at least two portraits of zamor, including one from the painter drouais. The identification of the portrait of carnavalet as zamor is not absolutely impossible, but is also not very likely if we compare it to the most probable portrait, that of drouais, known from a photograph (cf. Joseph baillio, "a portrait of zamor, bengali page of madame du barry", gba, october, p. 233-242). ". Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: circa 1770.
