Study of gunfire from HMS 'New Zealand' RMG PV2719, William Lionel Wyllie, circa 1914

Study of gunfire from hms 'new zealand' inscribed by the artist, lower right 'new zealand'. Wyllie's identification of the ship, seen here in stern view, has to be accepted from the lack of detail to confirm it. The drawing is more a study of the gunfire shown, probably during a practice shoot. The ship’s topmasts, visible above the blast, were reduced in 1915, indicating an earlier date for this watercolour. The foremast of another battlecruiser is just visible over the gun smoke. The 'new zealand' (1911) survived the war and remained in service until 1922. Her sisters were 'indefatigable' (1909) and 'australia' (1911). [revised pvdm/btodd 2/13]. Date: circa 1914. Dimensions: 289 mm x 447 mm. Collection: Fine art.
