sketches in the baltic. The first shot fired at cronstadt. The event commemorated in this engraving took place on the 6th of july. The carte blanche (so called from being originally laden with paper) was formerly a coaster, of the same size as an ordinary canal-boat. It was fitted up by order of commander boyd, who, in the evening tried the range of a 32 pounder gun, which had been slung in a peculiar manner, at an angle of 45 degrees, in one of the wood boats captured a few days ago. The boat was moored across the stern of the flagship, and three or four shots fired.;the fall in the water was eagerly watched for, but it took so long a time before it fell that it was given up; but in a few seconds. The boat was towed a little nearer the shore, opposite one of the new earthen batteries, near the governor's house. And a couple of shots fired. Perhaps, the first shots from an enemy that have ever alighted on the island of cronstadt. Date: 4 August 1855. Place of creation: London. Medium: wood engraving. Depicted Place: Kronstadt.
