iconographic description:
urban landscape. Rambouillet hotel. Gardens. Two pavilions are visible in this view. Characters. Historical commentary:
rambouillet was a hotel with a garden of almost thirty acres. It was located in this part of the faubourg saint-antoine crossed today by the lyon railway. The hotel consisted of four pavilions placed at each corner of the garden. It was also called reilly's garden, or rambouillet madness. The owner of this hotel was one of the farmer generals of the time. His son, rambouillet de la sablière, was an author of madrigals. The rambouillet garden was created around 1660, although we cannot indicate the date with certainty. Rambouillet was also called hôtel des quatre-pavillons, because a pavilion had been built in each corner of the garden. Also called jardin de reilly, or hôtel des quatre-pavillons, the folie rambouillet is the property of nicolas i de rambouillet (1576-1664), secretary of the chamber of finance and advisor to the king. Built between 1633 and 1635, the pleasure house is made up of four pavilions placed at the corners of the park. The garden of nearly thirty acres located in the faubourg saint-antoine (covered by the current railway tracks from the gare de lyon), open to the public, extends to the edge of the seine. The rambouillet family being protestant, the rambouillet madness serves as a stopover for embassies from protestant countries and more generally for non-catholics arriving in paris, who await their official entry into paris through the porte saint-antoine.
