It is not many decades since the viewer from the old stone main bridge saw the image of the so-called bleaching houses, which stood in front of the old city wall with their washing and drying houses. The construction of the high quay has of course displaced these, but even today the remains of the former fortifications remind us of the past. In two sheets signed "deutschherrnkai" (no. 6 and 12) we see parts of these remains. One view is taken in the area of the upper main bridge. Starting from the right, you can see the towers of the new dreikönigskirche, the teutonic order church and the frankensteiner hof. Of the original six, later five towers of the main wall, three are still visible: the kuhhirtenthurm (elephant), the second has been converted into a dwelling and the third is in a half-ruined state. The other view is taken from the area of the exit of paradiesgasse through the arch of the kuhhirtenthurm. The left of the two low covered verandas appearing in the middle of the picture is the well-known “altänchen”. Date: circa 1896. Dimensions: reproduction: height: 15.8 cm (6.2 in); width: 22.2 cm (8.7 in), original: unknown. Medium: collotype print. Collection: Private collection Mylius.
