Title: "representation of itagaki's distress" ("板垣君遭難之図") (itagaki kun sōnan no zu). After being forced out of the government, itagaki taisuke would spend the rest of his life agitating for representative government. In april 1882, itagaki was attacked and injured by a thug named naobumi aihara while he was campaigning in gifu city (the gifu incident) as shown in this print. Aihara was a supporter of the government. Itagaki uttered the famous phrase "itagaki may die, but freedom won't die! (“板垣死すとも自由は死せず”). Made by utagawa toyonobu ("歌川豊宣"), 1882. Date: 1882.
