iconographic description:
in a ring game, the duke of orléans, riding a wooden horse, attempts to thread his sword through the rings held by two women, seated in baskets. These are princess victoria of england and a german princess (victoire de saxe-cobourg-kohary?) who are trying to marry successively to the duke of orléans. Both taunt the prince with a snub. Talleyrand, seen from behind, is perched on a small wooden cabin and controls the game, while king louis-philippe runs the carousel. He does not realize that by making the duke of orléans and the princesses run at the same speed, they will never meet. In the background, behind a fence, impersonations of newspapers watch the scene while writing humorous articles. From left to right: the “corsa […] [corsaire]”, “le // charivari”, as a musician striking cymbals and wearing a hat with bells, “le nouvelliste” writing an article which will be laudatory since he is paid by the government, as evidenced by the bag of crowns. Behind him hides a man embodying the newspaper le figaro. We can only see his hat and his deceitful eye. Finally, the “caricatu […] [caricature]”, a man wearing a fool’s cap with bells and tricolor feathers, contributing to his news column entitled “pochade”. The pl. Makes fun of the difficulties that the duke of orléans has in marrying, in particular because foreign nations, the “old stocks” see the orléans family as part of the “young branches” (in explanation). Problem of legitimacy of the july monarchy which is struggling to assert itself on the european political scene. The pl. Plays on the polysemy of the word “ring” since it designates this childish game, and also the wedding ring. Person / character represented:
talleyrand-périgord, charles-maurice de; louis-philippe i, king of the french; orléans, ferdinand-philippe d', duke
