label copy: "acts of filial piety (showing respect for ones parents) were considered among the highest marks of virtue in the confucian system of thought, which was imported to japan from china in waves beginning in the eighth century. The devout householder in this scene has set up an altar with wooden statues of his deceased parents, and he honors them with offerings of sake and prayers for their well-being. The artist sets the scene at new years, with the plum and pine arrangement and offerings of the special kagami mochi, which are rice cakes in the shape of mirrors. "
