Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-02-14) letter no. 224 (1944-02-17) next letter (1944-02-20) envelope: front back text blankenburg, february 17, 1944. My beloved mother! once again, i send you greetings from the bottom of my heart. I suppose my first letter has already arrived? in the meantime, i was transferred from the general company to a training marching company. On the first day there, my stomach pains and diarrhea came back. I immediately reported sick and went to the doctor. The doctor sent me to the infirmary, which is a sick ward in the barracks. I am now lying here in the infirmary and i am doing very well. I am being given white bread and tablets. There are lovely white beds here and it is heavenly quiet. The others in the company are working hard; today is a 40 km march! i'm glad i'm here [i can at least write now. ] (on the right edge of the letter - vertically) how long does it take for the mail to get to you? Date: 17 February 1944.
