Portrait of the spanish diplomat josé curtoys de anduaga († 1891), who was the brother of the painter joaquín curtoys de anduaga. José curtoys worked with his brother in various legations, and in stockholm he held the rank of plenipotentiary minister. Due to his knowledge of several languages, he translated schiller's don carlos from german to spanish, and the sitter appears wearing the legion of honor and the great cross and sash of the order of isabella the catholic.
